Two Experiences Admissions Officers Love to See

While there are many things that make a strong application, here are two things that students frequently overlook, but that typically make a big impact to admissions. If you’re a high school sophomore or junior, it’s not too late to add these to your “to-do” list.

1. 💼 Get a Job (Any Job!)

Never had a paying job? Now is the time.

Colleges don’t require a job to admit you—but having one speaks volumes. It shows maturity, responsibility, and time management. And it doesn’t have to be fancy!

🛠️ Manual labor, babysitting, food service, retail—these jobs are often highly respected by admissions officers because they reflect real-world responsibility. Plus, earning your own paycheck builds confidence and life skills that go far beyond the application…and might even make a GREAT college essay topic!

2. 🎯 Build “Evidence” for Your Intended Major

One of the most powerful ways to support your application is by connecting your extracurriculars to your academic interests.

  • Want to major in biology? Look for research, volunteer or shadowing opportunities.

  • Planning to study history? Volunteer at a museum or historical society, see if you can help a History teacher with a project, or create an Instagram account that teaches about a particular aspect of history that intrigues you, or reviews books on history.

  • Interested in business? Help with a family business, start a summer side hustle, or join a virtual entrepreneurship camp.

🎓 When your activities align with your intended major, you give admissions officers a clear and compelling story—and it helps your application stand out in a crowded pool. Bonus points if you’re also getting paid or giving back at the same time!

Final Thoughts

Whether you work or dive deeper into your future major, these experiences help build a stronger application and a more confident you.
